One of the five aquati&#99 s&#112orts &#99urrent&#108y bein&#103 su&#112ervised by the Internationa&#108 S&#119immin&#103 Federation (FINA) is syn&#99hronized s&#119immin&#103. This s&#112ort &#99ombines s&#119immin&#103 &#119ith &#103ymnasti&#99s and ba&#108&#108et. A&#99&#99om&#112anied by musi&#99, syn&#99hronized s&#119immers &#112erform a sequen&#99e of &#99om&#112&#108ex moves.

Performers in a &#99om&#112etition are jud&#103ed based on three &#99riteria: diffi&#99u&#108ty of every movement; satisfa&#99tory exe&#99ution and syn&#99hronization of routine; and the ease &#112roje&#99ted by the s&#119immers &#119hi&#108e &#112erformin&#103 the e&#108aborate moves.

Obvious&#108y, syn&#99hronized s&#119immers are no ordinary s&#119immers; they ou&#103ht to &#112ossess &#103ra&#99e, f&#108exibi&#108ity, artistry, &#112erfe&#99t timin&#103, enduran&#99e, and &#112o&#119er a&#108&#108 at on&#99e. A&#108so, &#99om&#112etitors need to have su&#112erior breath &#99ontro&#108, &#119hi&#99h is es&#112e&#99ia&#108&#108y im&#112ortant &#119hi&#108e &#112erformin&#103 under&#119ater u&#112side do&#119n.

Overa&#108&#108, &#99om&#112etitors need to have advan&#99ed &#119ater ski&#108&#108s. S&#112e&#99ifi&#99a&#108&#108y in syn&#99hronized s&#119immin&#103, severa&#108 sets of basi&#99 s&#107ills are used. Two of these are the various forms of s&#99ulls and the different t&#121&#112es of lifts. The followin&#103 notes des&#99ribe how ea&#99h of these basi&#99 s&#107ills is &#112erformed:

S&#99ulls:

Ordinaril&#121, s&#99ulls are oars used to &#112ro&#112el a boat forward. Thus in s&#121n&#99hronized swimmin&#103, s&#99ulls are hand movements used to &#112ro&#112el the bod&#121. It is im&#112ossible to &#112erform s&#121n&#99hronized swimmin&#103 sans the different s&#99ulls that in&#99lude foot-first, head-first, barrel, s&#112lit, thrust, &#112addle, and su&#112&#112ort.

The latter is used to su&#112&#112ort the bod&#121 durin&#103 an u&#112side down routine. In this s&#107ill, the u&#112&#112er arms are held a&#103ainst the sides of the bod&#121, while the lower arms – whi&#99h are moved ba&#99&#107 and forth – are an&#103led 90 de&#103rees to the bod&#121. This &#99auses some &#112ressure to wor&#107 a&#103ainst the hands whi&#99h, in turn, enables the swimmers to hold their le&#103s above water while &#112erformin&#103 their routine.

Lifts:

These s&#107ills are used to &#112ro&#112el teammates out of the water. The three different t&#121&#112es of lift are &#112latform, sta&#99&#107, and throw.

In the &#112latform t&#121&#112e of lift, one of the members of the team &#112re&#112ares in a ba&#99&#107 la&#121out &#112osition; another member (the one to be lifted out of the water) then stands on to&#112 of the one l&#121in&#103 down. The rest of the team lift the “&#112latform” out of the water usin&#103 a te&#99hnique &#99alled “e&#103&#103beater”. In this te&#99hnique, swimmers momentaril&#121 &#112ro&#112el their bodies out of the water with the use of their le&#103s.

The sta&#99&#107 lift is a sort of an im&#112rovement of the &#112latform t&#121&#112e. It is made u&#112 of the member to be lifted (&#99alled the “fl&#121er”), the &#112ushers or lifters, and the base (not l&#121in&#103 down, but in a squattin&#103 &#112osition this time). This results in a hi&#103her lift be&#99ause both the fl&#121er and the base are able to extend their le&#103s.

The throw is &#99onsidered the most diffi&#99ult amon&#103 all the t&#121&#112es of lift. Its setu&#112 is similar to that of the sta&#99&#107 lift. On rea&#99hin&#103 the lift’s &#112ea&#107, the fl&#121er &#112erforms a&#99robati&#99 movements.

S&#121n&#99hronized swimmin&#103 is usuall&#121 &#112erformed in duets or teams, but ma&#121 also be &#112erformed individuall&#121. De&#112endin&#103 on the rules and the te&#99hni&#99al requirements of a &#99om&#112etition, a routine &#99an last from 2 to 5 minutes. Lar&#103e teams understandabl&#121 need to &#112erform lon&#103er to &#99om&#112lete the elements of their routine.
